Konqueror version 3.5.6 File Manager Mini Howto for linux. (I am using ubuntu 7.04 and kde) :-) Back to Main Page
This is a very short version, and if you want to know more, go to the Internet etc.
This howto is without any guarantee, and you may use it on your own responsibility only.
There may be errors, but I do not want to use too much time to write this howto.
To check specific words you may try: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (search).

Konqueror is both a file manager and a web browser, so you can use it
both for files on your own computer -and for files on the Internet
(also
called webpages).
You can even use it for moving files to -and from Internet sites e.g. if you have your own website (e.g. on a webhotel).
You can just use it, as if it is all on your computer (the Internet really
is "one big computer" and it is all about files (copy, move, rename,
read,
view files and lots more).

The easiest way to use a file manager is to open konqueror (it changes automatic from web browser to filemanager and vice versa):
Back to Index of Page
Above you see Konqueror opened as a "Webbrowser" - it has an http URL
address"http://www.google.se", whereas if it had an ordinary filesystem
address e.g. "/home/niels3" it will work as a "File Manager" (not much difference really)
Click top right on the "double square" icon to reduce the size
:

Back to Index of Page
Above you see konqueror in reduced size, placed on the Desktop. You can
change the size of konqueror, by dragging with the left mouse
button, in the lower right corner (mouse cursor changes to a double
arrow), and release the mouse button, when you have the right size.
You also note, that Konqueror is working as a webbrowser, as the address in the top bar is "http://www.google.se/".
Now click "ctrl+d", and you get an exact copy next to the first copy of
konqueror (below), with the same address, but as I have just
clicked on the "home" icon
you will note, that the lower right copy has shifted to the home directory of the computer (but it could as well have been
the google address (which is really also a directory):
Note, that the address "/home/niels3" copy (see below) has a blue top bar
(the title line), which means that this window is the active - but
to
make the google copy the active one, just click inside this window (or on the title line), and then this window will be active instead.

We will now copy a file
from the /home/niels3/downloads/skype directory to the
/home/niels3/test directory.
Back to Index of Page
First we will go to the "from" directory, by clicking in the
lower right window on the "downloads" directory, and then on the "skype" directory
(above) -"skype" is a subdirectory of
the "downloads" directory.
Then we will go to the "to" directory in the top left window, by clicking on the "home" icon
(above) and then clicking on the "test"
directory (in the "/home/niels3" window) (below):

and then you get (below):

Back to Index of Page
Then we drag the "skype-1.4.0.74.deb" file from the "skype" folder to
the "test" folder with the left mouse button, and release it in "test"
- you must choose from the small pup up dialog whether you want to move,
copy or link the file
----- we choose move -----
and you see the result (below):

Back to Index of Page
This is the principle to use, and you can move files both ways, and you
can move as many as you like (just select the files), and you can even
do it
to and from a directory out on the huge Internet (but then you
might need a username and a passsord, to be allowed to do it).
Please note the three thick (blue/green) arrows
- which are supplementary to clicking on a folder to change directory:
The "left arrow" will bring you back one step at a time to where you came from.
The "right arrow" will bring you forward one step at a time (if you have been back some steps).
Those two bring you to whichever address you came from, even http addesses on the Internet
The "up arrow" brings you back one step at a time in the path, that is
e.g.: from /home/niels3/downloads/skype to /home/niels3/downloads to
/home/niels3, etc. and is not the same as the "left arrow".
Another practical thing is, to save the look of the file manager, so it always will be the same - choose Settings
- Save View Profile "Web Browsing"
(below):

Back to Index of Page
Then pop up dialog (seen below) shows up, and if you select both "Save
URLs in profile" and "Save window size in profile":
- and click
"Save", then the next time you open Konqueror, it will look exactly the same, each time you start the program.
Note, that there are two selection choices "File Management" or "Web
Browsing" (see below), so you can save for both situations, and
Konqueror
knows
whether it is a file manager profile (/home/user/...) or a web browser
profile (http://...).
Really there is not much difference, as the Internet is "ONE BIG HARDDISK" (spoken in a picture language).

To manage files as sudo (or su) super user, open a shell konsole, and write on the command line:

Then "Konqueror" will open, but now owned by "root"
However "TAKE CARE", when working as "sudo", as you can harm your
system, if you make any mistakes - only do it when absolutely
necessary,
and when you know what you are doing.
The "Super User" can delete all files on the system, whereas a normal "user" only can manage files belonging to him/her.
