Konqueror webbrowser and filemanager a very short minihowto

Konqueror version 3.5.6 Mini Howto for linux. (I am using ubuntu 7.04 and kde) :-)    Back to Main Page

This is a very short version, and if you want to know more, go to the Internet etc.

This howto is without any guarantee, and you may use it on your own responsibility only.

There may be errors, but I do not want to use too much time to write this howto.

Konqueror is both a Web Browser and a File Manager, and changes depending on whether the address in the address bar is an Internet address

e.g. "http://www.name.com" or a file name e.g. "/home/user/filename".                                                                        Back to Index of Page

Konqueror's main menu, top left on the Konqueror main window: "Location - Edit - View - Insert - Format - Table - Tools - Help" is mostly

used, when konqueror is working as a File Manager, e.g. moving, copying or opening files.

I will first show how to select files in two different modes, "Detailed list view" and "Icon view" - you shift between the modes, by holding down the left mouse button on the "Icon view" icon Konqueror choose view mode

and then choose the mode.

I will go through all the Konqueror Main Menus and explain the items I know -and use most:

Location Menu: Back to Index of Page

Konqueror - Location Menu:

New Window: Click on this (or ctrl+n) to open a new window (empty).

Or click "ctrl+d" to make a copy of the window (duplicate with contents) - Not shown in the Location Menu. Back to Index of Page

New Tab: Click on this (or ctrl+shift+n) to open new tab New tab

I have circled the new tab with black.

Open Location: Click on this menu point to open a location (folder): Open Location (new directory)

Then click on the

small blue directory icon to the right in the "Open Location" dialog, and then select a location in the file manager window which opens up.

Save as: Click on this menu point Konqueror save as

(only as webbrowser), to save the webpage in a directory on your harddisk:

Quit: Click on this to close down Konqueror (or use the small "X" in top right corner) The "Close" icon, top right corner of Konqueror

Edit Menu:

Konqueror - Edit Menu:

Copy: Click on this (or ctrl+c) to copy a selection to the Clipboard.

Paste Clipboard Contents: Click on this (or ctrl+v) to insert the contents of the clipboard (e.g. in another folder).

Delete: Click on this (or shift+del) to delete a selection (be careful as you will loose it) - "Del" only will shift it to the "Trashcan", so it is not lost.

Find: When Konqueror opens with an Internet address in the address bar "http://www.something.com" the Edit Menu contains the "Find Menu" (or "ctrl+f") - then a small dialog opens, and you can insert a word or sentence Find text dialog

- then click the "Find"

button.

To "Find Next" click "F3".

This "Find" function (ctrl-f) seems to be part of most web browsers, and I find it very useful when opening pages with lots of text.

View Menu:

View Mode: Here you can change the way your files are arranged in Konqueror.

Icon Size: Here you can change the size of the icons in Konqueror.

Show Hidden Files: Click here to show the hidden files (files which name begins with a dot), and click again in order not to show.

You can sort the files, by clicking on the top bars (circled with black - shown below):

You can sort again in opposite order, by clicking again - Note you need to have the "Detailed List View" Mode chosen, to use this option.

Bookmarks Menu:

Konqueror - Bookmarks Menu

Add Bookmark: When you click this item, the address in the address bar is bookmarked below in this Menu, so you just have click on the

bookmark, the next time you need this address.

Edit Bookmarks: Click this item, and you can organize and move your bookmarks as you like - when you are finished you can export (save) your

bookmarks - best to export as "Mozilla Bookmarks" I find - and then a file manager window opens, and you can choose where to save etc.:

Toolbars: Here you can select which toolbars you want (the bars with icons below the Main Menu) - Here Main -and Location Toolbars are

selected.

Save View Profile "Web Browsing": Here you can save the way konqueror will look, each time you open it, and you can save a profile both as a File

Manager -and a Web Browser (Konqueror knows when to shift between the two "modes" automatically).

Configure Toolbars: Here you can change which icons you want i each toolbar.

Configure Konqueror: This is the Main Configuration Menu, and I will now show how I have sat my Konqueror up (to copy if you like):

The History Sidebar will show, where you have been in the last 90 days, URL addresses - click the "Clear History" button, if you want remove
