Kubuntu version 7.04 Feisty Fawn INSTALL - a Mini Howto for linux. (I am using ubuntu 7.04 and kde) :-) Back to Main Page
This is a very short version, and if you want to know more, go to the Internet etc.
This howto is without any guarantee, and you may use it on your own responsibility only.
There may be errors, but I do not want to use too much time to write this howto.
To check specific words you may try: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (search).

Kubuntu is an ordinary Ubuntu Linux distribution, but has the
KDE Desktop preinstalled. (I use KDE because I am used to it, only)
In order to get an install cd, see my download_iso_howto.
I have made this install guide after my memory mostly, so there may be some "slip" I have overseen (not remembered correctly).
See to that the computer is connected to the Internet (probably via an
ADSL broadband modem - the one with the green lamps flashing)
To begin the install, start the computer, and when you hear a beep, press the "Pause" button (top right of keyboard).
Open the cd slot, and insert the install cd - close again - press enter.
At boot prompt "boot:" - press enter
After some minutes kubuntu is installed as "live cd" which mean it is
run from cd only, and after finish, everything is forgotten.
You see a small icon in upper left corner of the Desktop (main working
area of screen) "Install", so to get Kubuntu installed permanently
click this icon, and the "installation to harddisk" process will begin.
First comes the "Welcome" dialog, where you can select the installation
language, which will also be your language after installation:

Back to Index of Page
We choose English as our language, but you can select another language by dragging the vertical slider, and then clicking
to select a language - then click "Next":
You then get the "select city" dialog, where you just click a city to
get the proper time zone for your system (set your clock right)
and we select New York (an example only):

Back to Index of Page
You see the Time zone and current time (image above, lover part) - then click "Next":

Back to Index of Page
Above you see the "Keyboard layout" dialog, where you select the layout of your actual keyboard, here we select "U.S. English",
and in the right window you select keyboard version "U.S. English" also.
In the lower left text bar you can insert a few typically characters of
your keyboard, click in the bar with the mouse, to get a blinking cursor
and then write some letters/numbers - then click "Next", to get to the "partition your harddisk" dialog:

The installation program will automatic check how your harddisk is
partitioned.

We will install Kubuntu on the whole harddisk, so we choose
"Guided - use entire disk" - then "Next" click and you will get
the "Who are you" dialog (below):

What's your name?: Fill in
your real name (in this example "Joe").
Back to Index of Page
What name do you want to use to log in?: This will be automatic filled with first word from above line, but you may correct it
(in this example "Joe").
Choose a password to keep your account safe: Fill in your password, and repeat in second text bar (best minimum 8 figures),
and REMEMBER it (keep it in a safe place) - it is part of a Linux security system.
What is the name of this computer?: Will be filled automtic, (but you may change it - "Joes_pc") - then "Next" click - and you will get
the "Ready to install" dialog, where you can see your selections (you
may go back by clicking the"Back" button to correct anything
you made wrong):

Back to Index of Page
(Above just expample) Now to begin the very installation press
"Install" (when the installation process has started there is no way
back):

You will see some varying text, but this part will take aprox. up to
half an hour (depending of you computer) don't touch anything:
When the installation is finished you will see:

Press "OK" button and reboot, remember to take the installation cd out, when the cd slot opens - close slot and press enter.
There might bee two reboots this first time, but then the boot loader menu will show up.
You can either wait intil Kubuntu starts up, after some seconds ( a count down will be seen), or press enter immediately.
If you press the "down arrow", the start process will stop (always will), and you can read the boot loader menu (to learn),
or choose another item of the menu - then enter.
Back to Index of Page
You will then see a login dialog, where you need to insert your username and password (see above "Who are you" image)
Then the "KDE Desktop" will be seen.
Kubuntu is now installed, but only with a fairly small amount of programs, so you can begin using it right away.
You can click on the konqueror browser icon (lower left), and begin browsing right away.
However to send and receive e-mail, you need to set your e-mail client (KMail) up with the login data etc. you got from your
Ineternet Service Provider (see my "kmail_howto").
If windows is installed on the whole harddisk you may choose "Manual" on the Kubuntu partition dialog (to manual partition),
or instead cancel the whole installation process, and use GParted to partition the harddisk, before the install.
Press "ctrl+alt+del" keys at the same time, to reboot, and at beep
press "Pause" button, open the cd slot and replace the "install
cd" with
a "GParted cd" (See my "download iso howto" for how to to create a GParted live cd).
First however you have to start windows to bring all windows data to front part of harddisk.
See that all windows programs are closed, before defragmenting.
Then choose: Start (menu) - all programs - accessories - system tools -
disk defragmenter - start defragment (Aprox. so, as this is not
a manual about windows, and I do not remember the exact names og the
menus), but this defragmenting should move all windows data to the
front part of the harddisk, to make it possibly to resize the
windows partition, which will take place from the back part (spoken in
picture
language).
Back to Index of Page
When finished defragmenting - switch off the computer.
Now start the computer again, after beep press "Pause" button, insert GParted
cd - close slot -enter and then resize the windows partition, to
free up place for the Kubuntu partition (and swap partition).
See my "gparted_howto".
After all this you can begin the install again.
