How to get linux help minihowto for linux newbies. (I am using ubuntu 7.10 and KDE)  :-)                               Back to Main Page

This is a very short version, and if you want to know more, go to the Internet etc.

This howto is without any guarantee, and you may use it on your own responsibility only.

There may be errors, but I do not want to use too much time to  write this minihowto.

To check specific words or items you may try to Search in:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page/    or    http://www.google.com/

The most efficient way to get help, is using a search engine like google, as it directly will search the Internet inclusive the most important mailing list archives,

for your search terms.

Write your question, as if it is asked to a person, as most questions on the mailing lists are asked just like that - below some random examples:

"how to install ubuntu together with windows xp"

"how to install ubuntu"

"my nvidia g8400m graphic card does not work"

"ubuntu mailing list archive"

Use without double quotes and use lower case    -   http://www.googleguide.com/

A mailing list is a website, where people with same interests can send questions as e-mails, about subjects, and other people can then answer the questions - by

replying to the e-mail, using the same subject line.

Such a row of questions -and answers with the same subject is calles a thread (just a collection of e-mails with the same subject line).

Threads are necessary, to be able to follow questions and answer about the same topic in an orderly way.

The e-mails are sent to the list, and not directly to individuals.

The mailing lists keep archives of all e-mails sent to the lists, so people at a later time can search the archives to get answers to their problems.

When asking a new question (starting a new thread), it is important to fill the subject line with a very clear (unambiguous) sentence, explaining very short what

the question is about, so that the subject string can later be used as search string for others - please do not write anything like "ugh, I have a problem" or

similar.

When you later answer to at thread, it is good policy, to keep the first asked question on the top, to remove other answers, and to place your reply at the bottom,

as people normally read text from top to bottom.

Here is a list of some of the Linux related webpages, I have used most recently, to get information and help for my Linux work

The pages are arranged in a fairly alphabetical order of contents.
