Lynx version 2.8.5 irc Mini Howto for linux. (I am using ubuntu 7.04 and kde 3.5.6)               Back to Main Page

This i a very short version, and if you want to know more, go to the Internet etc.

This howto is without any guarantee, and you may use it on your own responsibility only.

There may be errors, but I do not want to use too much time to  write this howto.

My idea is to make documentation, so you can at the least start using the system.

I (66 years old) have abstracted what I find most important, from lots and lots of documentation.

To check specific words you may use: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page  (search).

It's easiest to print this howto out, to use it, by your side !

Lynx is a text only webbrowser (same as e.g. Firefox and Konqueror and others), so it will not show graphic pictures.

It is very fast, and you can use it as a file manager as well.

To use it, open a shell, and call lynx with some parameters:                                                Back to the Index of Page

lynx /etc

To call lynx as "sudo" (a variant of the super user) write: "sudo lynx /etc".

Lynx will then open with its starting starting point at the directory /etc:

Lynx opened at /etc directory

You mostly only use the arrow keys: Keyboard, the arrow keys                                                                                 Back to the Index of Page

You will notice, that "../" is red, and that shows where you are - means that you are at the /etc folder (see top left).

Top right (p1 of 15) means that there is 15 pages.

Below "../" you can see 12 directory, and to go to the apt/ directory (means /etc/apt) you just click "down arrow" until apt/ is red,

and then you click "right arrow" to get into the apt folder:

Lynx /etc/apt

You see, top left, that you are  in the /etc/apt folder, and below the red "../" you see some 9 files.                    Back to the Index of Page

To go to the "sources.list" file, click the "down arrow" until you reach the "sources.list" file, and then  you click "right arrow"

to open the file:

Here you see the top  contents of the sources.list file, and you move down the file by clicking the "down arrow" key, and you

move up by  clicking the "up arrow" key (or "space" key/"page down" or "page up" key) to move down or up, one page at a time.

To move to the "/"   folder press "g" and then "/" - enter.

When there, move down to the links "blue color" - use "down arrow" until you come to e.g. "A Good Life Howto" (red  color to mark):
