Scrapbook, a webpage manager Mini Howto for linux. (I am using ubuntu 7.04 and kde)               Back to Main Page

This i a very short version, and if you want to know more, go to the Internet etc.

This howto is without any guarantee, and you may use it on your own responsibility only.

There may be errors, but I do not want to use too much time to  write this howto.

My idea is to make documentation, so you can at the least start using the system.

I (66 years old) have abstracted what I find most important, from lots and lots of documentation.

To check specific words you may use: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page  (search).

It's easiest to print this howto out, to use it, by your side !

Scrapbook is a webpage manager
(a plugin) for Firefox, and it gives you a lot of overview over webpages, it acts as a kind

of bookmark manager as well, and when you get used to it, you will never more be without it.  :-)

To get it installed, open Firefox and choose Tools - add-ons, and then click on the "Get extensions" button:

Firefox Tools - add-ons window

Then in the small search  window write "scrapbook" and click the "Search" button (see below, just a clip):

Firefox Add-ons search window with "scrapbook" written

Then in the window with search results click on "ScrapBook" (see below, a clip):                        Back to Index of Page

Firefox the result window, click on "ScrapBook"

Then you will come to a install window, and just click on the green "Install now" button (see below):

Firefox green Install now button
You will then come to another  pop up window, and you have to click the "Install Now" button (see below):        Back to Index of Page

Firefox install confirm second pop up window

Now Scrapbook will be installed immediately, and you will need to restart Firefox, to activate it, a pop up window will show:

Firefox "Restart Firefox" pop up window

Then Firefox will restart, and you will see, that scrapbook is installed, both the "Scrapbook" menu opened, and the scrapbook

working area can be seen, in the left side of the Firefox working area (it shows my scrapbook, so you will se some contents):

Firefox, with scrapbook just installed                                                                 Back to Index of Page

You toggle (open/close) scrapbook by pressing "ctrl+k", but you can also close it by clicking on the red x button Scrapbook red button with white x, to close scrapbook window

To demonstrate how scrapbook works, i will use an empty scrapbook profile (there can be several scrapbooks working at the same time).

You see a webpage (debian) just opened:

Firefox a webpage just opened

To save this page in scrapbook we will first make a directory, so click on the green plus icon Scrapbook plus icon on the toolbar

and you will get:  Scrapbook, plus just clicked for new folder  and then choose "New Folder":

Scrapbook, the write new folder name pop-up window                                                                 Back to Index of Page

As you can see, I have written the name of the new folder as "debian", so just click "OK", to create the new folder (see small clip below):

Scrapbook, a new folder by the name "debian" just created

We will now add the debian webpage to scrapbook, and put it into this folder.

Right click in the (debian) webpage and select "Capture page":

Scrapbook, right click webpage, select capture page    then select "Select folder":  Scrapbook, capture page, select folder

Scrapbook, select the folder, to put the active web in                                                                                         Back to Index of Page

As you can see, the "debian"  folder is selected (clicked to blue color), so now click "OK":

Webpage placed in selected scrapbook folder

And the webpage is placed in the "debian" folder - you can close the folder by clicking the small "-" box, or open it again

by clicking the same box which will then show a "+" (means there are one -or several webpages in a folder).

If you later want to see this webpage, which is now copied to your harddisk, just left click the name of the webpage, and a local

copy will be opened.

If however you want to see a new copy, reload (the page might later have been changes) the same page, you just right click the name,

and select "Open source url", and then a fresh copy will be copied to the webbrowser (Firefox):

A webpage name right clicked and "Open source url" selected                                                                                                                                             Back to Index of Page

If you want to remove the webpage, just right click the name and choose "Delete".

If you want to change the name of the webpage, right click on the name, and choose "Properties":

To change name of webpage, right click on name, and choose "Properties" and change Title name

You can see the webaddress of the webpage in the "URL" address bar, which shows, that scrapbook is also a bookmark manager.

You change the name in the Title name bar, and I have here changed it to  "debian_user_list", and then just pressed "OK":

Webpage name just changed, using rightclick on name and choosing "Properties"                                                                                                                     Back to Index of Page

You can create one -og many new folders (one at at time) by pressing the green "+" icon, and you can put folders inside other folders,

by dragging them with the mouse:

We will here move the folder "mailing lists" into the "downloads_K-Z" folder, and press on the "mailing lists" folder with the mouse

so it becomes blue (which mean selected):

Moving a folder to another position, folder selected with the mouse (blue)

We now hold the (left) mouse button pressed, and drag the "mailing lists" folder to the "downloads_K-Z" folder, and then release the button:

Dragging a folder into another folder, by holding left mouse button pressed, and release when over the destination folder (blue color)

The folder will now be placed inside the "downloads_K-Z " folder.

You can "drag and drop" both folders and files, but it needs a little training, to get it placed where you want.

There is another way, to manage the scrapbook folders, namely the Tools - manage:

Scrapbook - Tools dialog                                                                                                 Back to Index of Page

Choose "Manage", and you then get the Manage dialog window:

Scrapbook - Tools - Manage dialog window

To sort all your folders -and files in the scrapbook file tree, choose Tools - Sort Entire Tree, and the following dialog appears:

Scrapbook - Tools - Sort Entire Tree dialog

Click the "Start (N)" button to begin the sort:

Scrapbook, the sorting in progress window                                                                         Back to Index of Page

And then the whole filetree will be sorted in alphabetically order.

Here you see the real address (URL):  A real webb address (URL)

And here you se the same address of the local scrapbook copy: The local scrapbook webaddres (URL)

You open a local copy by clicking on the name of the webpage, in the scrapbook window (debian_user_list): To open a local copy, click on the scrapbook name

The local copy it sitting on your harddisk, and you can do some editing to this webpage, which has nothing to do with the real page,

somewhere out on the huge Internet:

You can e.g. put a note on a local webpage, and to do so, open the local copy:

A local scrapbook webpage, ready to be edited

To do so, click on the "Create sticky Annotation" icon button:  To create a sticky annotation (small note) click the "Create sticky Annotation" button                                                         Back to Index of Page

Then you get a small box on the webpage, and you can write text in it:

A sticky annotation box opened on a webpage

I have put some of the explanations inside the sticky annotation box.

You can always click on the box, to reopen it, and do som more editing.

When finished you must click on the small blue floppy icon in the lower right corner, to save the edited local webpage again: The blue floppy save icon, click to save edited local page
