Strigi v. 0.5.5 Strigi Search Mini Howto for linux. (I am using ubuntu 7.04 and kde) :-) Back to Main Page
This is a very short version, and if you want to know more, go to the Internet etc.
This howto is without any guarantee, and you may use it on your own responsibility only.
There may be errors, but I do not want to use too much time to write this howto.
To check specific words you may try: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (search).
Index Of Page:
Install following
To put a start icon on your Desktop
To get the icon in place on the Desktop
To open the strigi search dialog click on the "strigi" icon
To make a search
The Status dialog:
The Preferences dialog
To add a directory to be indexed
Strigi is a very fast indexing and search program, so you can quickly find your own data, e.g. old e-mails or text files etc.
Install following with synaptic (or adept):
Strigi-daemon, strigi-applet, strigi- plugins and strigi-utils. (do not install strigi-client, as it is for demo purposes)
Also Libclucene 0.9.15 or newer and Libmagic must be installed.
After installation put a start icon on your Desktop,
by right clicking on the desktop:
Back to the Index of Page
Then choose "Link to Location (URL)"
File name: Write "strigi",
Enter link to location (URL) (see above): Write "strigi:/" - click "OK", and the "strigi start" icon is made
.
To get the icon in place on the Desktop, right click on the desktop and choose: Icons - Sort Icons - By Name.
Then again right click on the desktop and choose: Refresh Desktop, and the Desktop is cleared for black spots.
Now click on the "strigi" icon,
and the strigi search dialog opens (below):
Back to the Index of Page

We will now make a search on "79.5" (just an example of a number in an existing e-mail), and see the result (below):
Back to the Index of Page

Note: The result is split up in groups "Mail" and "Text" etc. (above)
Click on the blue text (above), to see the content of the found e-mail (see below):
Back to the Index of Page

Besides the search dialog there some more dialogs: status, preferences, help and about - we will first look at "status" (below):
Back to the Index of Page
The "Status" dialog:

In the "status" dialog (above) you can stop and start the
program, and you can index/reindex by clicking on the "Start
indexing" button.
Besides you can se the result of the latest indexing (the size of the
whole index is 130 MB), and the indexing took, on my computer aprox. 6
min.
In the "preferences" dialog (below) you can edit which directories you want to be indexed (see below):
Back to the Index of Page

To "delete directory" means only, to remove it from being indexed by
strigi - and the "/boot/" directory is going to be added (see above) -
then
click "add directory":
Back to the Index of Page

As you can see, the "/boot/" directory is added, and please also NOTE
the text: "Don't forget to start indexing", so you will have to go back
to the
"status" dialog, and start indexing (once more to get the new folder included into the index list).
There are some other programs alike this, among others "Recoll" which
is also good (it takes a lot of space, aprox 100 pct. extra, but it is
almost
unlimited in the numbers of pages, which can be indexed - the documentation tells) - I have tried both.
